
Standard radiation uses photons (X-rays), which deposit dose along their whole path, including tissue beyond the tumor. Protons instead release most of their energy at a controlled depth (the “Bragg peak”) and then stop, so there is little exit dose past the target. This can spare nearby healthy tissue, which is especially valuable when a tumor sits next to critical structures or in children, whose growing tissues are more sensitive to radiation’s late effects. Proton therapy is delivered at specialized centers. For most common cancers it has not been proven superior to modern photon radiation, so its role is an area of ongoing study and case-by-case judgment.
Like other external-beam radiation: after a planning scan, treatment is delivered in daily outpatient sessions at a proton center. Each session is painless and takes minutes.
Side effects are generally local to the treated area, similar in kind to photon radiation but with a different dose distribution. Availability is limited to specialized centers and insurance coverage varies by indication.
